Note April 15, 2010: Thank you all for your emails. They have meant alot to me. I will continue to update the movie section often.

What is "The BubbaJames Happenings"? It is a kind of "Newsletter or Blog" on the "happenings, interests, ideas and thoughts" in the life of Bubba.  I guess you could say this page is more for me than anyone else but who knows, maybe my sharing will in someway be of interest to others.

My online interests and involvment are many:

As for hobbies, I enjoy movies, reading, music, and genealogy to name a few. Much of this page will reflect my interests.  I will do my best to continue to bring news from Freedom Village Forum when it warrants passing along. I will update this page often and if you, the reader, should have something you would like to go here, I'm only an email away.

NEWS

Freedom Village Forum

April 10, 2010 - In  March 2010 a six month subscription was renewed for the forum. What does this mean? It means there will be no ads and many of the features people have taken for granted will continue. In other words, the forum will stay as is.

In February 2010 FV Forum's accreditation  was  renewed by HON for another year and Bubba assured visitors the forum would continue to honor the 8 principles.

A new Daily Motivator with beautiful music, spectacular photos and thoughts by Ralph Marston was added to the top portion of the forum in March 2010.

Texas Mags  continues to  support the board everyday and post daily achievements in celebration of those who remain free of tobacco use.

Our long time friend Shaine from Australia also visits everyday to provide advice and friendship to anyone who may need her. She is always giving a warm welcome to visitors and old friends who stop in on the Village.
Our Journey To Freedom

April 10, 2010 - I created "Our Journey To Freedom" Forum a few years back but no one participated so I put it on the back burner of N54.

Recently I decided to bring it back out to the public as it had many of the Rambles/Journeys of old quit friends. I came to realize it had become an archive of valuable information that could help others with their quits.

Last week I found Shaine's two year ramble and added it to "Our Journey" Forum. No one has posted since I reactivated OJTF but I'm hopeful it will become known and helpful to visitors.

Florida Legislative Update
Smoking in Vehicles with Minor Passengers – SB 2596 approved by Senate Transportation this week.

SB 2596 by Senator Victor Crist (R-Tampa) and HB 1141 by Representative Kevin Ambler (R-Tampa) were inspired and written by a group of high school students from the legislators’ districts through the, “Ought to be a Law” program. SB 2596 and HB 1141 create a second degree offense for a person
who is smoking while driving or in control of a motor vehicle when a minor under the age of sixteen is in operation or is parked.

If found in violation of the secondary offense, law enforcement may either issue a warning, or assess a $100 noncriminal moving or nonmoving violation in addition to issuing a penalty for the primary offense.

SB 2596 received unanimous approval by the Senate Transportation Committee this week. Student members of the “Ought to be a Law” program presented the bill, and explained the health risks to children associated with second hand smoke exposure. Several weeks ago, HB 1141 was discussed during a workshop by the House Roads, Bridges and Ports Policy Committee, however the committee did not vote on the bill.

If You Marry a Arkansas Girl
From Nadine
There were three men. The first man married a woman from Mississippi. He told her that she was to do the dishes and house cleaning. It took a couple of days, but on the third day, he came home to see a clean house and dishes washed and put away.

The second man married a woman from Oklahoma. He gave his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes and the cooking. The first day he didn't see any results, but the next day he saw it was better. By the third day, he saw his house was clean, the dishes were done and there was a huge dinner on the table.

The third man married a girl from Arkansas. He ordered her to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed, and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day, some of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye, and his arm was healed enough that he could fix himself a sandwich and load the dishwasher. He still has some pain when he urinates.

How Books Influenced My Life
April 11, 2010
I'm starting this book review because of my lifetime love of books and reading. I remember the first book I learned to read from and the hardest word I ever tried to read. I was 6 and in the first grade, the book was "Dick and Jane" and the word was "flower". I think my biggest problem was understanding my vowel sounds.

At age 7, repeating the first grade, there was a large bookcase in our classroom filled with a series of books about the future of cars and cities......it was love at first site and I suspect that is where the seed for Science Fiction was planted!

At age 8, third grade, my teacher began reading aloud on a daily basis from the book series "The Boxcar Children".....that started my love for adventure.

At age 9, fourth grade we began reading from an American History text book......that is when my love for American and World History began. It is also the time I discovered a school library for the first time and I began reading book after book about presidents and American Revolutionary hero's during their growing up years.

At age 10, fifth grade I discovered the "public library" and the first book I checked out was a mystery about a young man who survived the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. I remembered how this mystery, disaster, historical and adventure novel kept me up until 5 AM in the morning......that gave me a need for mystery , history (fact and fiction), disaster and adventure in books and movies.

Have you ever thought to yourself how books/reading shaped your life? You can see how it influenced mine. I can't imagine a world without books!

What I'm Reading Now
April 11, 2010

The Gunslinger I

The Drawing of the
Three II
The Wastelands III
Wizard & Glass IV
Wolves of the Calla V
Song of Susanna VII
The Dark Tower VII

The Dark Tower
by Stephen King

This was one series of books I didn't think Stephen King would ever complete! I bought "The Gunslinger" back in 1982 when we actually had a mall here in Fort Pierce with a Barnes & Noble. I paid a fortune for that book and went on to get "The Drawing of the Three", "The Wastelands" and Wizard & Glass". After the fourth book I gave up waiting for Mr. King to finish the series.

Over time I must have given away those four books because when I went to eBay and found that Mr. King had finally written all seven, I discovered my books were gone when I went to reread them and buy the other three. As it turned out, I had to purchase all seven and believe me folks, that wasn't cheap......durn that Stephen King's hide!

I've now gotten half way through, "The Wastelands" and the story is just as exciting as I remember it. Ok, so Stephen King can get a bit boring but......you can always scan through the boring stuff and jump to the good stuff.......like fast forwarding a DVD movie!

The Dark Tower is mainly Sci Fi with a bit of the old west and magic thrown in. The magic reminds me of what you would find with Merlin.

This series of books are not the typical horror Mr. King is famous for. There is time travel along with an alternate world of adventure and mystery. Strong characters with the main ones being Roland the Gunslinger, a young man named Jake from the 1970's, Eddie a drug addict from the 1980's and Susannah, a wealthy black lady from the 1960's who is an amputee with a multiple personality.

It has taken me as many years to read these books as it took Stephen King to write them.....sheesh!

Treasure of Khan
by Clive Cussler & Dirk Cussler

April 11, 2010 - Clive Cussler is the writer for one of my favorite book characters, Dirk Pitt. Some day I would like to collect all his books on the Dirk Pitt adventures.

I'm embarrassed to admit I have been reading "Treasure of Khan" off and on for the past few years......yep you read right.....I did say "a few years" and I'm only half way through! No matter how long it takes to pick the book up and read where I left off.....I always remember what took place in previous chapters.
"Genghis Khan the greatest conqueror of all time, who at his peak ruled an empire four times the size of Alexander the Great's, a vast expanse which stretched from the Pacific Ocean to the Caspian Sea. And now somebody wants it back. Dirk Pitt and the NUMA crew are about to come head to head with their most dangerous ever enemy. A mysterious Mongolian mogul harbors a dream of restoring the conquests of ancient Mongolia. He holds a dark secret about Genghis Khan, his grandson Kublai Khan and the treasures of Xanadu - treasures of gold, yes, but also much, much more. His relentless pursuit of them will cause devastation to millions unless Dirk Pitt can somehow find a way to stop him."

Paranormal Activity

When Katie (Katie Featherston) and Micah (Micah Sloat) fear their San Diego, Calif., home may be haunted by a demonic presence, Micah sets up a video camera to document all the jaw-dropping, hair-raising action over a series of several nights in fall 2006. The paranormal occurrences increase in frequency and significance, leaving Katie more and more distraught -- and determined to put an end to the terror.

Bubba's Review: Good grief what the heck possessed me to watch this one? Well like most, I like to watch a good scary movie now and then but this one was down right SPOOKY! In the  beginning it reminded me of a real life documentary. As the movie progressed I was convinced I should not have been watching it and knew it would not have a good ending. I won't give away the ending but lets just say it may come as a shock and depressing surprise for most. As for me .....I wouldn't want to watch it a second time ...no way. This is not real nor is it based on a true story.

The Stepfather

Mom's (Sela Ward) new boyfriend, David (Dylan Walsh), isn't quite right and Michael knows it. A series of mysterious events leads the teen to suspect that David might in fact be a dangerous serial killer known for preying on families. Now, all he needs to do is gather evidence before it's too late. Nelson McCormick directs this spine-tingling remake of the 1987 thriller based on the real-life story of killer John Emil List.

Bubba's Review: This is the remake of "The Stepfather" from 1986. I liked neither it nor the 1989  "The Stepfather 2". Why did I watch this one if I hated the original? Curiosity I suspect got the best of me.
I started feeling uncomfortable with this movie at the very beginning, it was........creepy, that is the only word I can come up with just now. Even though it was predictable, it was also supenceful, had good acting but ........it was just......creepy! Not suited for the whole family.

 (2009)
Length: 91 minutes
Planet 51

When Earth astronaut Capt. Chuck Baker (Dwayne Johnson) arrives on Planet 51 -- a world reminiscent of American suburbia circa 1950 -- he tries to avoid capture, recover his spaceship and make it home safely, all with the help of an empathetic little green being. Joe Stillman (Shrek) writes and Jorge Blanco directs this animated thrill ride that also features the vocal talents of Jessica Biel and Gary Oldman.

PG - Mild sci-fi action and some suggestive humor

Bubba's Review: There is a lot of kid left in me and this kind of movie brings it out. It is one of those "feel good....fun...cute" kind of animated entertainments suited for all ages.  It is a  reverse "ET" where Capt. Baker is "ET" landing on a earth like  planet inhabited by green antenna beings. I enjoyed the 1950's culture of this race as it gave the movie a good feel.

Smallville:
Seasons 1 thru 8
A Superman Television Series

Description from Season 1:

A young Clark Kent (Tom Welling) struggles with normal adolescent issues -- along with figuring out just how to deal with the puzzling powers he now possesses and the oddly devilish goings-on in Smallville, the tiny Kansas town where he lives. Taking up most of his time, however, is his affection for the stunning Lana Lang (Kristin Kreuk).

 (2001 - 2009)
Length: Each season has 6 discs with 3 to 4 episodes at an average of 3 hours per disk.

Bubba's Review:

Smallville has been a series playing on the CW Network since 2001. I would surf channels and always pass it by with no desire to watch. About a year ago my neighbor Jay said, "Bubba I think you would like Smallville." We have the same interests in television shows and movies and I thought, "Why not, I'll start with renting Season One and see how it goes."

After that first season I was hooked but I found myself getting bored with Clark's love life......I remedied that problem by fast forwarding to the action! Every season ends as a cliff hanger but the good thing about watching on DVD is you don't have to wait months for the answer AND......no commercials! Another advantage is you are able to watch the episodes and seasons close together which makes it  easier to stay with the storyline.  It is cool to watch these kids grow up and mature as actors. Each season introduces new characters and heroes from the Superman comics and past movies.

I'm up to episode 3 of Season 6. I enjoy the show so much I have been collecting all eight seasons from Amazon and eBay. So far I have 6 seasons, two more to go and I'll have them all!

2012

Description :

When typhoons, earthquakes and other disasters suddenly threaten to destroy the world, Jackson (John Cusack), his estranged wife, Kate (Amanda Peet), and others surmise that the secret may lie in ancient Mayan prophecies that describe global calamity in the year 2012. Roland Emmerich co-writes and directs a star-studded ensemble cast that also includes

Thandie Newton, Oliver Platt, Woody Harrelson, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Danny Glover.

-Length: 158 minutes-
Bubba's Review:

Ok this movie is way too unrealistic but it WAS entertaining and isn't that what movies are all about?

It is long but packed with action, great special effects and sound that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

There is an underlying message in this movie.......it's about sacrificing on a global level.....what are the consequences of not being able to save everyone?

I enjoyed this movie enough to actually buy it!

PG-13 - Intense disaster sequences and language.

In Remembrance of Liddie

About Liddie Wilhelm: Liddie came to Freedom Village some years back not only to help herself quit and stay quit from smoking but to let others know the dangers of smoking cigarettes and to quit before it was to late. She was already in the final stages of COPD. Liddie was a collector of recipe books and she would share them here and in Freedom Village Forum II, which I gave to her when I could no longer manage it. Liddie spent many hours typing in recipes until one day I got an email from her saying, "Bubba no one is coming to my board." I felt for her but was unable to get others to visit and post. With this new newsletter I will place one of Liddie's recipe's here every month. If you would like to visit click the name and it will take you there.  I hope you will post your own recipes in Freedom Village II as I think my friend would have liked that.If you would like to become the caretaker of Liddie's Village please let me know. Liddie passed away as a result of COPD on August 29, 2007.

Note: This is not one of Liddie's recipes.  If you want one of Liddie's recipes please visit "Liddie's Village" and while you're there, how about sharing a few of your own and it might just end up here!

Peach Cobbler with a Cinnamon Crust

Description:
Some people think the crust is the best part. This recipe has plenty of it. It's baked separately and laid on top of the peaches--unorthodox, but crispy and flavorful nonetheless.

Yield: 10 servings

Ingredients:

1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
6 cups sliced peeled fresh ripe peaches or 2 (16-ounce) packages frozen sliced peaches
Cooking spray
2 tablespoons sugar
1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated pie dough (such as Pillsbury)
1 large egg white, lightly beaten

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°.
Lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Combine the flour, 1 cup sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon in a small bowl. Place the peaches in an 11 x 7-inch baking dish coated with cooking spray. Sprinkle with sugar mixture; let stand 30 minutes.
Combine 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and 2 tablespoons sugar in a small bowl. Unfold 1 pie dough, reserving remaining dough for another use. Brush with egg white; sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar mixture. Cut the dough into 16 wedges. Place the dough wedges, coated sides up, on a baking sheet coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until golden brown; set aside.
Bake peaches at 350° for 30 minutes or until bubbly. Arrange crust over peaches. Serve warm.
